As you read this, the Waimanalo Christian band, 7 Simple Pieces, has begun its one-month tour of Africa, Europe and the United Kingdom. According to founder Jonathan Calpito, the band’s goal is to spread aloha and its island-style Christian message. They will explore the meaning behind the hymn Amazing Grace -which will be videotaped for a film with other bands called The Beautiful Scandal of Amazing Grace. Curious about the new addiction rehab center in his neighborhood, Curt Harada visited Hina Mauka years ago and left “wanting to help out in some way.” As controller at Hawaii Electric Industries, Curt soon slipped into the role of Hina Mauka’s treasurer. Now he’s chairman of its board and has another gift for the facility: The 2006 HEI President’s Excellence in Service Award, which goes to HEI employees who volunteer at nonprofits. The award came with a $1,000 gift to Curt’s favorite neighborhood charity ... John Westerdahl, director of wellness and lifestyle medicine at Castle Medical Center, leaves this month for a similarly healthy position at Murad Medical Spa’s Inclusive Health Center in Los Angeles ... Two of HH’s outstanding people are Kailua residents: Dr. Daniel Fischberg was named HH’s 2006 Physician of the Year, earning praise for his concern, affection and responsiveness to patients. And Anne Davis is Volunteer of the Year for her 16 years of commitment. They say that busy Anne started early by caring for her siblings, then moved on to comfort a much larger world with her “calm, warm presence” ...
