Pono Chong (re-elected) both rolled up their sleeves and joined the cleanup crew Oct. 18 at Castle High’s Make a Difference Day ... Speaking of which, Brycen Kawamoto of Puohala Elementary was first ($125), and Javan Au of Laie Elementary placed second ($75) for grades K-2 in the islandwide “Make a Difference” poster contest, which drew more than 5,000 entries. Look for their art in a Castle & Cooke calendar in 2007 ...

If you’re heading for Kaneohe District Park Saturday, look out for kickers and goalies, as the Kaneohe AYSO is throwing its 30th anniversary party for about 1,300 kids and their parents and coaches. “Lots of people look at soccer as the last sport,” says Frances Sawai, an AYSO soccer mom for more than two decades, “but we’ve been around for a looong time” ...

Former college volleyball stand-out Arsena Kailihiwa of Kaneohe will head up the sales division for Air Reps Hawaii, which has developed useful products for our hot, humid climate: portable air conditioning units (June Jones uses them at practice), fans with water mist, water coolers, etc. ... Speaking of sports, Terry Olival says the live auction is a great way to make money for Castle hospital’s breast cancer programs at the Women’s Night Doubles (on now through Saturday at Kailua Racquet Club). Bidders have paid as much as $200 to play a round of tennis with some of these international athletes (754-6349) ... In a new twist to the Oklahoma! plot, director Ron Bright announced on the Paliku stage that Curly and his wife are expecting their second child (the off-stage Curly being Ron’s son Michael and wife Jade) ... Four Windward Oahu athletes placed in the T&C State/Ezekiel Halloween Havoc amateur skateboard contest at Manana Skate Park: Mike Sakaba of Kailua took first (for 18 and older) for his “huge transfer”; Leif Kennedy of Waimanalo was third and Tyler Medeiros of Kailua fourth (13 and under). Jason Park of Kaneohe placed fourth (ages 14 to 17) ... Not every glass artist blows it. Jane Raissle of Kailua fuses it, with great results. Her show, Fragile Nature at Bethel Street Gallery, features 18 examples of her art now through Nov. 27 ... Sometimes musicians help us to see even as we listen. That’s what Bob Rogers plans Nov. 14 when the Kailua band Coconut Joe plays at the O Lounge. Along with the music, Bob will show photos of what the Windward side looks like - not from a car but via bike and foot ...

Despite $1,550 in reward money, “We haven’t had anyone step forward with information about who was responsible for vandalizing the Kahuku Library,” says Janine Brand of the library’s Friends. The reward dissolves Jan. 1 ... Alas, the dog playing Sandy in Army Community Theatre’s musical Annie is not Shari Lynn‘s pet, as stated here last week. Star is a Hawaii FI-DO therapy dog in training, currently bunking with Richard and Anne Marie MacPherson of Kailua (see story on page 5) ... Now that St. John Vianney coaches Tammy Kaneaiakala and Lani Luna have seen their girls volleyball team win the Western division title in the Catholic Schools League (for the seventh straight year!), the women move on to coach SJV’s younger girls volleyball team in the Christian League. I bet they could even win the Pagan League, if there was one ... Former community newspaper publisher Eve Drolet of Waimanalo has published her own science fiction novel, Dragonmares, about a teenage boy who learns from a pet dragon on planet Oberon.
