Hana Hou inflight magazine calls Paula Fuga “spellbinding” and her voice “an instrument of deliverance.” The Waimanalo-raised singer plays at 8 p.m. Jan. 30 in the ARTS at Mark’s Garage for Verses (poets and an open mike session) and at 11 p.m. Feb. 16 at Club Bliss ... Margaret Weis, the author of three fantasy book series, is also behind the Dungeons & Dragons and Battlestar Galactica games, among others. She’ll be at Kaneohe Library at 3 p.m. Feb. 11 ...

Annie Wood has joined the board of trustees for Honolulu Theatre for Youth. A former director of children’s theater in London, Annie now lives in Lanikai with her husband Henry Ian Cusick (who plays Desmond in Lost) and their three kids ... You never know when you’ll meet a queen. You could go to the dentist’s office, and there she’ll be. Take Jessica Lau, for instance. She’s the newly crowned Narcissus Festival Queen.

The 2007 Narcissus fourth princess is another University of Hawaii student, Julia Chen of Kaneohe ... Maunawili resident Mike McCartney has a way of keeping in the public eye. Former PBS-Hawaii CEO and now chairman of the state Democratic Party of Hawaii, Mike has been appointed to the Honolulu Police Commission by Mayor Mufi Hannemann.

addressed the crowd at the Martin Luther King Day observance at the Kaneohe Marine base Jan. 11, he spoke from personal experience. Back on Aug. 28, 1963, Ed and his friends skipped work to go take in a speech - the “I Have a Dream” one - by a young preacher in Washington, D.C. “At the time, you knew it was a great speech, and special,” he told the Hawaii Marine. “If people heard it today, then there wouldn’t be as many problems” ...
