Speaking of drama, Ahuimanu Elementary student Mikayla Porter is dancing across town to be in Kaimuki Performing Arts Center’s The Wiz, directed by Peggy Anne Siegmund of Kailua and opening on Friday (733-4913). Mikayla is a munchkin in her first big play, and “she’s a joy to watch,” says grandma Beverly Webb ... Congratulations to former Red Raider standout David Stant Jr. (Kahuku ‘81) who was named varsity head football coach at Kamehameha last week ... The same to Kaneohe native Tiffany Taylor, named assistant women’s soccer coach at Bucknell University in Pennsylvania. Tiffany graduated last year from Boston University, where she won awards for her achievements on and off the soccer field ... Claude Horan, noted Kaneohe artist and former UH art professor, has an exhibit of his ceramics opening Saturday at the Gallery at Ward Centre (597-8034) ... Thomas “TC” Charters of Domenico’s Harley in Kaneohe put in a plug for his wife Cloudia‘s new novel, Aloha Where You Like Go?, centered around a malihini taxi driver and what she learns about living in Hawaii from her local fares. Visiting Kaneohe Star Market during its final days was a sad experience. Star was our Welcome Wagon grocer when we first moved to Ahuimanu in 1972, long before Safeway or Longs were nearby, and Temple Valley Shopping Center was just a twinkle in someone’s eye. I have dozens of Star pogs, for heaven’s sake! Still, it’s amazing what one is willing to buy when it’s 50 percent off and there’s nothing else on the shelf. Did you know that Dr. Ruth Westheimer wrote a Little Golden Book entitled Grandma on Wheels? Only $1.09!
