His entry, named after his wife Rochelle, has more than 1,000 sprouting flowers, and is 20 times the size of your average dendrobium spectabile. Wanna buy it? Lanikai’s Mapuana de Silva and Halau Mohala ‘Ilima dance at 6 p.m. Saturday at Hawaii Theatre, a yearly benefit for their Merrie Monarch trip (528-0506) ...
Le Jardin ohana honored Masu Kusume Dyer and the late George Kerr with its Founder Award March 10 at its Koolau Golf Club gala. George led the school’s board of trustees and helped secure the land for the Kapaa campus. Masu also served on the board for many years, and both were dedicated to making the small private school what it is becoming in 2007 ... Meanwhile, Castle High cafeteria manager Monique Takahashi could use some help hooking the speakers up to the newly installed sound system in the cafe (233-5628) ... Frank Oliva of Kailua is retiring as regional director of the Army Corps of Engineers’ Pacific Ocean Division (civil works and technical directorate). Now, Frank says, after four decades of government service and travel, he’ll have time to stay home, pursue art and enjoy the beauty of the islands ... Maybe Roger can relax at the Kailua Library courtyard on occasion.

Never a dull moment at the Kaneohe Library either. Young Adult librarian Cindy Chow is a paranoid schizophrenic - in the latest mystery by Lee Goldberg, Mr. Monk and the Blue Flu (as in the TV show). Lee brought Cindy’s fictitious character into his book as a detective who claims to have been abducted and impregnated by aliens…

For real now, Kaneohe pianist Kolomona Wilson-Ku, a junior at Kamehameha, played a Mendelssohn concerto March 17 at the concert hall with the symphony orchestra. An avid judo athlete, the versatile Kolomona is one of eight who won the symphony’s 2007 Hawaii Youth Concerto Competition. What a prize! ... Kailua marketing ace Roger Morey has taken the plunge from water (Hawaiian Natural Water Co.) into plastics (Pacific Allied Products), becoming PAP’s new vice president of sales and marketing. PAP supplies most of Hawaii’s foam, as in coolers, peanut packing, bottles, roof shakes, etc., etc. Roger also sits on the USO board ... Kailua’s Christopher Kale Jones is earning rave reviews as Frank Valli in the national tour of Broadway’s Tony award-winning Jersey Boys (about Valli and the Four Seasons). Chris played the father in Once on This Island, directed by Ron Bright a few years back at Castle. My daughter Erin Chang Wells (Castle ‘96), who was in that Island cast, caught Chris’s play last week in San Francisco, but alas it was the understudy’s night on stage! Outside the theater, they ran into another Jersey Boys fan, Robin Williams ...
Aikahi’s Briana Pratt will sing in the Don Ho show Sunday at the Waikiki Beachcomber as part of her grand prize in the Al Waterson and You Teen Vocal Competition ... Maxine and Jeff Haun are in Kaneohe to visit family, including daughter Shannon Haun Chang (Castle ‘92), now a teacher like her mom. Maxine was at Ahuimanu El. for years, before Jeff’s dolphin studies took them to England and California. They’re now in Italy with NATO. Jeff’s contract, explained to me over his hearty dinner at Kim Chee #1, is to ensure sonar operations don’t harm marine animals
