Randy is a rescue swimmer stationed at the Kaneohe Marine base, which had several Sailors volunteering for litter duty March 13 on the H-3. Speaking of drama, five artists have captured the imaginative expression of the IONA Contemporary Dance Theatre through paint, camera and sculpture. The work of Rebecca Horne, Ginger Royal, Mary Farkash, Chandra Miars (all from Kailua) and Stan Zisk are featured in Mused by IONA exhibit at the Mercury Lounge on Fort Street Mall. It opens April 6 during First Friday, and there’s also a party there at 9:30 Saturday night (262-0110) ... Speaking of First Friday, upcoming WCC artists Pati O’Neal (paintings and drawings), Steph Moelders (paintings and sculptures) and James Anshutz (photo manipulation) will show their works in the Mendonca building courtyard during the popular monthly event ... CPAC director Karen Meyer would like to borrow some “vintage suitcases” for the 42nd Street musical at Castle (233-5379). That one opens Thursday night ... Shakti Dance Movement’s Kalae Kaina, who teaches bellydancing each Sunday afternoon at the Kailua Movement Center, will stage a fundraiser Thursday at NextDoor (downtown) to help the troupe attend a Tribal Fest, a weeklong bellydancing festival in California. You can shake your way down there from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m., or call Kalae at 358-2571 ... No surprise here. Waimanalo farmer of gourmet veggies, Dean Okimoto, will receive Ka Lei Hano Heritage Award for his “community engagement and collaboration with local agencies and businesses.” The UH College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources also will present Kaneohe resident Carl Evensen with the Alvin and Charlotte Nakamura Hoku Award for his work in CTAHR’s department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management. It’s all happening April 12 at Hilton Hawaiian Village (956-3090) ...

Michael Hyde of Kailua will have to skip his high school graduation here, since he will already be assigned to Fort Hood, Texas. Michael is due to complete Army basic training this month at Fort Benning, Ga. Mom Lisa McCune says he’s proud to serve - including an expected yearlong duty in Iraq - and will be the fifth generation in his family to do so. (Dad Richard McCune is a Marine with 12 years of duty so far) ... Kailua’s Leilani Madison, an HPU associate professor of English, presented her ideas on “nonviolent classroom communication” during spring break in New York City. Her audience was worldwide delegates to the Conference on College Composition and Communication ...


Castle High junior and ace clarinet player Justin Ricafort performed at the Mozart Music Hall in Honolulu March 25 as one of the winners of the Morning Music Program’s $1,000 scholarships. Also among the winners were BYU-Hawaii vocal students Heather Foutz and Joseph Davis Moore ... Still more Windward-town connections. Kailua’s Tony Pisculli and other directors will hold auditions on April 7, 10 and 11 for the Hawaii Shakespeare Festival this summer. (Call 256-6657 for details).
