Though her February trip to Hawaii was cut short by bad weather, Rwanda genocide survivor Immaculee Ilibagiza was still able to make it to St. Ann’s Church in Kaneohe, where she spoke to a packed house of nearly 1,000 about forgiveness and peace. Immaculee, now living in New York with her husband and two children, survived the 1994 massacre by hiding for 91 days in the bathroom of a local pastor - with seven other Tutsi women. She has written her story in Left to Tell and has a foundation to assist orphans of that period (www.lefttotell.com) ... The Post Polio Network gets a treat at 10 a.m. Saturday when Susan Luehrs of Kahuku’s Hawaii FI-DO and Kailua’s Judy Suan - with her medical alert service dog Jazzy - will address the group at Rehab Hospital, showing the comfort and success that dogs can bring to people (261-8752) ... Dean Yoshida of Kaneohe is the new manager of the Beretania branch of Central Pacific Bank. Dean’s worked in the financial management area for 28 years, and also is active in Hope Chapel-Kaneohe Bay ... Kolomona Wilson-Ku played a Gershwin piano concerto with the Honolulu Symphony Orchestra last month. An earlier column had the Kaneohe teen playing a different piece ... Hail and farewell. This Sunday Pastor Jerald Ogg will install his son Jeff as the new senior pastor for Kailua Assembly of God (the church next to Kalaheo High). Jeff and wife Barbie came here from ministries in Tennessee, and that’s where Jerald and wife Janett will head to retire in August ... HPU graduate and Kailua resident Andrew Meader is bringing Altar Boyz to Hawaii. The “fabulous spoof on boy bands” opens April 18 at Hawaii Theatre (528-0506) ...

Klinton Imai, a student at the Hawaii Job Corps Center in Waimanalo, is the first Hawaii student to be accepted into an advanced training program for A+ Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer repairs. He flew out last week to join the New Jersey Job Corps Center program ... Yvonne McDermott of Kailua had some luck with video poker recently at the California Hotel - $20,144 worth of it. Also winning in downtown Las Vegas were Stephanie Bowes of Waimanalo, $15,290; and Joan O’Connell of Kailua, $9,909 ... Looks like the Saloon Pilots may have some competition among island bands. Now there’s a group calling itself Mike White and the Saltines ... Kailua’s Deborah Nakashima, HPU associate dean for graduate advising, will step up that skill in October when she takes over the gavel of the National Academic Advising Association for two years at its fall convention in Baltimore
