Del.icio.usAretired teacher and widow from Maine, Hazel Rand has made a big impact in her Kailua community since arriving here three years ago. Windward Rotarians will salute her for Service Above Self (see calendar) Saturday for “her extensive volunteer work.” Hazel helped establish Project Graduation in her home state, and when she got to the islands, she plunged into the Kailua Relay for Life (she’s a cancer survivor, too!), the AAUW, Reading Is Fundamental, IHS and Family Promise via Kailua United Methodist Church. Way to go, Hazel ...
Kaneohe talent Hoku Zuttermeister will perform with the Makaha Sons Friday at Hawaii Theatre. Then the Makaha Sons travel to Ahuimanu Saturday for a concert at Koolau Center benefitting Hina Mauka… There’s a new Hawaiian album out by Alden Tokuzato of Waikane, who whet his appetite while playing with his fellow students (Hoku Z. among them) back in Dawn Cone‘s Polynesian music class at Castle High. Kaimanahila also offers a touch of jazz. For more info, call 284-4070 ... Yet another local church has plunged into the Windward movie theater business in a big way: New Hope Windward Senior Pastor Dave Barr admits that the set-up and break-down for Sunday worship has to be very well-orchestrated, yet his mobile church enjoys its new home in the Regal Theatres at Windward Mall. There’s AC, soft chairs, a big stage, lots of parking ... As most of you know, former Kaneohe Ranch and Castle Foundation CEO Randy Moore went back to pubic school, and continues to be promoted like a good student. On April 5 the BOE approved him for the best fit yet: assistant superintendent for the Office of Business Services (He’s been the acting one since last year). Seems he knows plenty about business and people, and schools chief Pat Hamamoto calls him a “Renaissance man” ...
Emi Chang Espinda
Another well-known Windward professional, Emi Chang Espinda, has left her job as MidPac Country Club marketing director (and Koolau Golf Club before that) to become regional sales and special events manager for Ruth’s Chris Steak House and Romano’s Macaroni Grill ...Star student and mentor at Windward Community College Mikki O’Phelan has had her first story published - and she got paid! You’ll find her advice on living with rheumatoid arthritis in the April edition of the HMSA magazine, Island Scene. Main thought: get moving and keep moving ... Kailua quilter Mary Ceasar is the featured artist at the Quilted Treasures of Hawaii show April 27-May 6 at Linekona Art Center ...
In the midst of producing and staging her new play, Framed (Thursday-Sunday at Marks Garage, 550-8457), Y York is excited to see her newest characters come to life under the direction of her husband, Mark Lutwak. “I love working with him,” the Kaneohe playwright admits. “It’s interesting to have a marriage like this, where we get to see each other excel” ... When the lights flickered off during a scholarship luncheon speech last week, Windward Community College chancellor Angela Meixell quipped to a colleague: “Tell your boss we can’t pay our electric bill!” The real reason, she explained after the laughter, is that the lights are motion-sensitive, so everyone must have been sitting perfectly still, in rapt attention. They do have a huge electric bill every month though ... Kailua’s Tom Gambino is author of the nonfiction book, The Scattered Italians, just published by AuthorHouse, recounting the roots of the Gambino and Sparacino families “with gusto and a love of life” ...
