Del.icio.usWhen musician Eric Shank played piano for a music program in Pohai Nani’s Ruth Orcutt Bacon auditorium recently, he realized it was no ordinary grand piano. It had been Ruth Orcutt Bacon‘s first prize in a 1927 music competition in Chicago. Ruth was Eric’s longtime teacher here, and she guided him - and hundreds of others - on those black-and-whites ... It’s Maoli Arts Month, and Honolulu Hale has an exhibit up through May 20 that features Kapulani Langraf‘s Native Hawaiian photography students, including Kanani Aiu and Drew Kahuaina Broderick of Kailua ... Former Kailua resident Mark Tjarks, an assistant professor of English at HPU, led two playwriting workshops recently at the Kauai Shorts Ten Minute Play Festival. Mark wrote the prize-winning plays Mango Man and Ventriloquist ...
Kaelepulu fifth-grader Gigi Murray took first place among elementary school poets in the Kai Ola Oceans Alive Poetry contest sponsored by the Star-Bulletin‘s Newspapers in Education program. Lanikai Charter School’s Devin Caspillo and Nick VanDerKamp took second and third, respectively, among middle schoolers. Hauula Elementary sixth-grader Kapahulehua Sanders wrote hers in Hawaiian and placed first in that category. Reward for top winners is a trip for four on Hawaii’s Superferry ... Kailua author Ian MacMillan has won the 2006 UH Distinguished Graduate Mentoring Award for guiding scores of students, many of them flourishing in their own writing careers now. Ian is a creative writing professor working on his 12th novel ... Kailua filmmaker John Zak will have his documentary Pule Wailele screened Sunday at the Big Island Film Festival in Waikoloa ... Thursday at Hawaii Theatre. The cast is all local teens, with Kailua’s Tony Pisculli choreographing the fights and Kaneohe violinist Lisa Gomes advising on dance and music (528-0506) ... The Army has promoted Russell Rebmann of Kailua to lieutenant colonel, and baby daughter Magnolia has promoted him to new father (with new mother Laura). Now working in joint logistics at the Pacific Command, Russell’s past assignments include Iraq, Kosovo, Bosnia, Panama and the first Gulf War ... Not only did HPU’s student newspaper Kalamalama win two national awards - “Best Community Service” and First Place with Special Merit - its resident advisers for the college’s Windward dorms have turned out to be a pretty talented (or brave) group as they staged a dance of the nerds, so to speak. Kaneohe musician John Ortiz joins others at 7 p.m. Saturday for a Mother’s Day show with Latin flair at the United Puerto Rican Association hall on North School Street (847-2751) ... Heald College picked Castle High School’s Shawn Char for one of two Excellence in Career Education Teaching awards. Shawn teaches in Castle’s Healthcare Academy and advises the school’s Health Occupation Students of America club ... Speaking of Heald, Kailua High senior Spencer Pedrina won a $3,000 Merit Silver Scholarship from the college. Formerly Cannon Business College, Heald offers associate degrees and certificates ... Ron Foster, noted for his work on the Windward Passage solar project (see page 1), lived in Enchanted Lake for years before moving into the Kailua highrise. “I was one of the people who protested it,” he admits.
