Enchanted Lake students started off their Red Ribbon Week Monday with a visit from Elvis (performer Jonathon Von Brana), who gave them tips on the need to stay free of drugs ... St. Anthony’s students also pinned on their red ribbons Monday, heard from police detective John McCarthy and then took the drug-free pledge. Habilitat staff Joel Duavit and Jeremy Ng, plus a resident of the Windward rehab program, will also talk to the kids this week ...

Carole Kai and husband Eddie Onouye attended South Pacific‘s opening night to cheer on Sonya Mendez in her role as Bloody Mary ... Mix in a little irony for the revered Rodgers & Hammerstein musical: Newlywed Maryn Good thought she’d just go down and audition for the musical so she’d have something to do when her Marine husband, Lt. Dan (not from Forrest Gump), gets sent to Afghanistan. That’s coming up very soon. Maryn, meanwhile, landed the key role of Nellie Forbush, a spunky nurse deployed to the Pacific while her fiance waits her return in Arkansas ... Cheer on the Castle Knights at 6 p.m. Nov. 3 at Hawaiian Brian’s in Honolulu. It’s an eight-ball cheerleading tournament vs. Kapolei with prize money going to the winning squad (941-1343)

Twin brothers Preston and Payton Souza (Castle ‘05) have graduated from Air National Guard basic training a Lackland AFB, Texas ... Gene Sawyer, a 95-year-old Pohai Nani resident, no doubt celebrated United Nations Day on Oct. 24. She worked for the UN at one time, as well as the British Information Service, Overseas Red Cross, U.S. Foreign Service, Voice of America, East-West Center, KGMB radio, Associated Press Radio, etc. They tell me Gene hasn’t slowed down much. She’s in the PN wellness program and the book club, and she files reports for the residents’ newsletter ... Speaking of united nations, BYU-Hawaii held a “Parade of Nations” Oct. 19, with Gov. Linda Lingle at the keynote speaker. Enrolled students from 76 countries marched at the Jubilee Week event ... Castle High has collected more than $900 for Hurricane Katrina victims through its social studies classes ... Steve Butala recommends using the Mokapu gate to the Marine base this month because of construction at the main gate (257-2727, ext. 258)

Mel Murata reports that the Keiki Palaka Band’s Oct. 14 Hot Palaka Nights dinner and concert at Enchanted Lake Elementary drew 300 people and raised $1,000 for the Red Cross hurricane fund. The band’s music and hula friends who helped make it happen: Aunty Nickie Hines, Uncle Art, Aunty Ulu, Alan Akaka, Keith and Carmen Haugen, Aunty Nancy Gustaffson, Ron Johnson, Darren Tanaka, Jansen Richards and Uncle Mel himself. There’s nothing so nice as a relaxing honeymoon. It’s just the getting-there part that’s a challenge. After our daughter Erin Chang (Castle ‘96) married Tyrone Wells at Kualoa Ranch last month, they zoomed right to Kauai for a few days, and then allowed themselves two days to get to France: Lihue to Honolulu, Honolulu to L.A., L.A. to New York, and finally Paris (via car) to Normandy. Not exactly at an escargot’s pace
