Del.icio.usA talk story session May 20 at Kaneohe Library stirred an exciting buzz of memories among Kaneohe’s old Filipino families. While library manager Tom Churma, local businesswoman Sharon Maxilom and other panelists listened in amazement, the group really got into what old Kaneohe meant to them - from the dairies to the swimming holes, the theater to the long-gone markets. They were inspired too by several compiled volumes of old photos nearby. According to Aulani Apoliona (of the kamaaina Grote family), the time is right to record it all in tribute to Kaneohe’s pioneering families of all ethnic groups. Wanna help? A bit of Windward in town: Kailua’s Greg Sardinha and his group Po’okela play at 8 p.m. Friday at the Be Steel my Heart concert at Hawaii Theatre (528-0506). And Brother Sam and Vaihi play from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Duke’s Canoe Club in Waikiki - followed by Kapena Saturday and June 30) ... According to the Hawaii Marine, Corporal Kyle Ash gave Mokapu Elementary students a vivid lesson they won’t soon forget. In Kyle’s recent class talk about hurricane season, he compared the mud in a landslide to “how a cookie gets soggy in a glass of milk” ... Speaking of Marines, Ms. United States Kayla Downs came to call May 23, stopping at the Pacific War Memorial, the flight line, Kansas Tower, Child Development Center, Mokapu Elementary and Anderson dining hall ... REHAB Foundation president Ko Miyataki of Maunawili is very pleased by the May 30 Golf Challenge tourney that earned $233,165 to support the inaugural class of First Hawaiian Bank Fellows. (It pays stipends for advanced studies by Rehab hospital employees.) Kaneohe resident Robin Palama and Castle graduate Dawn Nakamura are among the first five fellows (pictured in last week’s Islander). Dawn is a physical therapist at Rehab and Robin’s a speech therapist who is “especially interested in helping patients with swallowing issues” ...

OK, so here’s the real Bobby Silva Jr. of Kailua on the left. Last week’s Waha on Bobby’s Hollywood acting jobs included a photo of his brother Brett, who is currently a dealer in collectible cars in Orange County ... Having a high school diploma paid off right away for Kahuku’s Lucie Wilson and Kalaheo’s Katrina Jardine. The girls won the grand incentive prize at their respective Project Graduation parties - a free car from Kailua car dealer Mike McKenna. Mike is well-known as a strong supporter of the parent-sponsored booze-free tradition ... Since opening in January, Kailua’s California Pizza Kitchen ASAP has already soared to the top as one of the nation’s best-performing ASAP venues, according to spokeswoman Carole Kai. In its first two months, she says, “they were No. 1 in sales among ASAPs (about 60) across the nation.” The restaurant currently is hovering around No. 6. Thanks for chewing, Kailua ... Biting into history is sixth-grade teacher Paul Waite, who won $1,000 as Hawaii History Teacher of the Year from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History and Preserve America. The Hauula man has taught at Kahuku Elementary for the past three years of a 15-year career. According to Hawaii History Day coordinator Bob Buss, Paul “positively demonstrates that fourth- and fifth-graders can think like historians and do history” ... SONY Pictures let Hawaii Student Television videotape interviews at Turtle Bay Resort with Surf’s Up stars for a promo of the film. The students’ video began airing last week on OC 16
