While ridding Kalanianaole Highway of litter on Aug. 4, for example, Pali Lion Ben Baniaga picked up $5 in Monopoly money, Karen Emoto found $5 in real money plus a pair of provocative red panties, and Robin Springer discovered a bra ... Meg Gammon says Kailua Racquet Club came through with plenty of tennis balls for Kalaheo High, thank you very much, but they still need more to protect new flooring in 25 more classrooms. Pohai Nani has a new chaplain intern, Chan Thawng Lian, who earned his bachelor and master of divinity degrees from Myanmar Institute of Theology ... Just heard from Kailua High graduate Jennifer Cavagnol, who wrote our two Windward Islander reports on Myanmar refugee camps. She’s now in Cambodia filming documentaries on the street children there ... Happy Birthday to state Rep. Cynthia Thielen (Sept. 22) and to Ron Bright (Sept. 2, during a matinee of The Pajama Game) ... Speaking of the Paliku musical, it was great fun to watch, but there’s this one song, Her Is, sung twice by Allan Lau that’s still bugging my grammarian husband. Sorry, Nelson, it just wouldn’t work for that rascal to sing She Is ... Speaking of onstage literacy, Allan’s colleague in the play, Lance Wheeler, who has the lead role of Sid Sorokin, has penned a new children’s book, Kula and the Old Ukulele, due for release next month. It comes with a CD of Herb Ohta Jr. playing Jumping Flea.

One more PJ thing: Steve Wagenseller replaces Glen Corlin as Mr. Hassler in the Sept. 14 show ... Alissa Arp has been elected chairwoman of the Women Leaders in Higher Education, Hawaii chapter, and she also was appointed president-elect of the Hawaii Academy of Science. A Lanikai resident, Alissa is HPU’s vice president for research and dean of its College of Natural Sciences ... Castle High art teacher Alicia Rogan‘s “studio” has relocated to the old metal shop, which has many interesting amenities and equipment still in place. Another thing it has, she says, is plenty of heat. “We need ceiling fans! Eight of them with BIG blades to cool off a lot of hot air and warm bodies” (plus a certified electrician to install them). Speaking of deserts, Kahuku Library’s book club will be discussing Laila Halaby‘s Once in a Promised Land at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 11. The characters leave their native desert in Jordan for opportunity in the desert of Arizona, only to face “the dust cloud of paranoia settling over the nation after 9-11” (293-8935) ... Congratulations to Kristen Shon of Castle High, Joshua Fox of Kailua and Alex Kahihikolo of Kalaheo. They each won a $1,000 scholarship from the Windward Community Federal Credit Union ... Washington State University presented Kaneohe student and honors student Aubrey Gene Kiemnec with a $600 Sports Management Endowed Scholarship. A senior, Aubrey is a volunteer youth coach, Relay for Life team captain and is majoring in sports management ... The Pacific Technology Foundation will honor Kailua resident Debra Pyrek as its 2007 Technology Woman of the Year at the industry’s awards gala, “Flavors of Technology,” Sept. 30 at the Sheraton Waikiki (237-3673). MidWeek‘s own Alison Stewart (better known as the Click Chick) is also being recognized among the state’s High-Tech Leaders there.
