Del.icio.usIchthyologist Jack Randall and his Kaneohe neighbor Sherwood Maynard have received the Coral Reef Outreach Network-Living Reef Lifetime Achievement award - Jack for his long and distinguished study of coral reef fishes, which he has shared with the University of Hawaii and Bishop Museum, as well as the rest of the world through his nearly 700 publications. He’s an outspoken advocate for marine protected areas. Sherwood is the longtime director of the UH Marine Options Program and a mentor to students in the field ... Todd Iacobelli of Kailua was the first male finisher in the Niketown 5K for Kids run Sept. 23 - a race that raised more than $130,000 for Oahu schools this year with 8,500 participants ...
Straub had the cure for what ailed them. Family and friends scattered the ashes of Norman Baxter Oct. 1 in Kaneohe Bay, off of the Kaneohe Yacht Club, where Norm, 84, was a past commodore. A decorated WW2 Navy bomb squadron veteran and Kaneohe resident, he was a retired vice president of Heide & Cook with a passion for sailing. His widow of 63 years is Anne ... Kaneohe’s Gary Pak is coordinating a playwright’s dream event, Write Hard, Play Harder, today (Oct. 3) through Friday at two venues: Kumu Kahua Theatre and UH-Manoa, with tips, panels and readings from the state’s top play-writing talents like Y York, Vicky Kneubuhl and Lee Cataluna. And it’s all free (956-7619). A UH creative writing prof, Gary is currently working on a collection of nonfiction (personal essays on contemporary Korea), a novel on the Korean War, revising another novel and doing short video pieces ...
