The Castle High School marching band is at risk for leg cramps this weekend. Director Arnold Alconcel has scheduled the Knights to march in the Kaneohe Christmas Parade Saturday morning and the Honolulu City Lights Parade that night. (On Dec. 8 his musicians present their winter concert in Ron Bright Theatre, but they get to sit down for that one) ... Speaking of City Lights, Shannon Wood reports that the Windward Ahupua’a Alliance again has a display at the nightly holiday exhibit next to Honolulu Hale and will use energy-efficient lights to illuminate a scene made from recycled products ...
Hawaii Pacific University has selected seven of its Windward students as President’s Hosts, an honor that reflects their scholarship and diverse contributions to the college. Representing HPU at social and business functions throughout the year will be nursing major Lysandra Padeken of Kaneohe, business major Jessica Mickelson of Kailua, public relations major Dayna Kalakau of Kailua, psychology major Daniel Cutter of Kaneohe, journalism major Samantha Black of Kaneohe, Lauren Kagami of Kaneohe and Marietta Adonis, a Kaneohe graduate student in secondary education ...
Shhh. Don’t tell anyone, but Castle operating nurse Frank Shuller will be underneath the Santa costume at the hospital’s annual tree-lighting festivities next Wednesday (Dec. 5). Frank is on CMC’s “body shop” team that assists in nearly every surgery performed there. No scalpels will be in Santa’s pocket, however ... Known for her golden touch in local theater and film costuming, Kaneohe fabricator Kathe James has helped magician Mike Ching create the ultimate, historic, European Father Christmas outfit for Mike’s seasonal work with Deluxe Santa Performers (836-1800) ... Donning a different kind of uniform, Krystle Manguba-Glover (Kahuku ‘07) has graduated from the Army ROTC leader training course at Fort Knox, Ky. She attends New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell ...
At this sentimental time of year, do not think sadly upon the demise of Sentimentally Yours - a Windward Mall store that closed in 2006, because Heidi Aoki-Phillips reopened it in August at Windward City Shopping Center, between L & L Drive-Inn and Rent-A-Center. And she has a new line of Christmas products ready, too ... Another summer happening, but still worth mentioning: Kailua’s Dr. Shawn Berry of Castle Home Care was named Physician of the Year in July by the Home Care and Hospice Division of the Healthcare Association of Hawaii ...
Castle High grad Jake Hudson is truly a rocket scientist, even though he doesn’t have to be one to read this column. As WCC’s Lanihuli Observatory ace tech support, he helped run the Nov. 16 Family Science Night there. “I did build a rocket for the ARLISS competition (for international student satellites),” admits Jake, who is now a WCC college prof and St. Andrew’s Priory physics teacher. “In fact, UH was the only university that provided its own lifting body for the event, which was sponsored by NASA.” The payload was a mere 11 inches long and 6 inches wide. The rockets were launched and ejected in Nevada’s Black Rock desert last fall ...
Several Windward artists, including Jodi Endicott and Carl Pao, will have works on view in the new gift shop at the Hawaii State Art Museum. The shop, which is open in the museum lobby only through the end of January, was created by Kailua’s Maile Meyer of Na Mea Hawaii, run by artist Suzy Thompson, and its “The Window” display was painted by Maile’s sister Moana Meyer ... The 2007 edition of the local literary arts journal Kaimana is out, with Kailua printmaker Dodie Warren‘s work on the cover and inside, plus Kaaawa’s poetic professor Kathryn Waddell Takara inside ...
Kaneohe born-and-raised Jennifer Callejo has her works on view at HPU Windward gallery, but what you may not know is that Jen won the Violette Wong Hu Award for amateur artists at last summer’s Artists of Hawaii show, and that she “touches dead bugs in a haunted house” for a living - as an entomology technician at Bishop Museum
