Kaneohe’s busiest promoter of Hawaiiana, Manu Boyd, reached a milestone in his work with Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center last month when they celebrated the opening of Royal Grove, an ethnobotanical garden said to be the largest hunk of green in the Waikiki core. Manu’s Halau o ke A’ali’i Ku Makani performed at the Nov. 16 dedication ... Ah, the many chimes of Walt and Alice Herring. The Kaneohe couple rang bells with the St. Andrews Bell Ringers Monday at the brass choir concert in town. In the Paliku Theatre version Dec. 10, there will be no ringers, because there’s no bell tower. But a joyful sound of the season is still in store with the 15-member brass and percussion ensemble (see story on page 7) ... Rick and Sasha Reichart of cakelava are bringing their popular cake-making enterprise to the Windward side, opening their long-awaited “custom cake studio” Sunday in Kailua. Allyson O’Connell (Kailua ‘06) has graduated from basic Air National Guard training at Lackland AFB, Texas - and from the photo, it looks like she really enjoyed it ... Stephen Lynch of Kahaluu says he occasionally takes walks with his tortoise around his Lulani Street neighborhood. (It takes a long time.) But now Stephen’s kicked it up a notch by writing a children’s book about his favorite pet, The Travels of Kui, the African Spurred Tortoise. You can find it at http://www.publishamerica.com ... The Small Business Administration has named American Savings Bank’s Martin Tadlas as its Lending Officer of the Year for Oahu. Beginning Dec. 3, the satellite city halls should have Kaneohe artist Michael Furuya‘s handsomely illustrated 2008 Everyday Environmental Hero calendar, while supplies last ... Kailua High alumna gael Mustapha is now a grandmother living in Charleston, Ore., where she and a fellow ex-patriot from the Big Island formed a Pacific Islander Club that attracted 40 members to their first meeting last summer. At gael’s’ 50th class reunion in October (in Las Vegas, of course), she also reports that Frances (Medeiros) and John Lewis were honored among the longest married couples. Now living in Texas, they married a few months before graduation in 1957 ...
St. Anthony’s School choir will sing at 7 p.m. Dec. 11 by the Honolulu City Lights display at city hall. The next day Kaneohe’s MighTy J (Jenn Wright, Tiki Suan and Mailani Makainai) will play there at 7 p.m. to support Toys for Tots. This is in addition to the band’s visit to the Women’s Community Correctional Facility this Sunday, where they plan to entertain as well as talk to the women there ... Honolulu Theatre for Youth’s current Christmas Talk Story production includes tales by Kaneohe writers Gary Pak, David Mulinix and Y York, and Kailua’s Susan St. John.
