Kailua Intermediate did it again. Eleven students in Kathleen Nullet‘s GT social studies class were selected to shadow a state senator or representative for a day next February. They earned this privilege by writing outstanding entries in the Leader for the Day Essay Contest, and will also attend an awards ceremony at the state Capitol. They are: Shion Pritchard, Caitlin Hooker, Tammi Sakaguchi, Stephanie Hudgins, Zachary Rasmussen, Lauren Barina, Colin McCreary, Shereen Peahi, Kaitlin Silirie, Nolan Suzuki and Emma Drake ...
Charles Kahl (Kahuku ‘99, Windward Community College ‘03) has completed Army National Guard basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C. ... Avis Akohele Jervis, who has directed the Windward spouse abuse shelter for more than a decade, is still doing it, but she has acquired new last name. Just call her Avis Kalama. She recently married an old boyfriend from 37 years ago, and “he’s a wonderful man” ...
Anne Mapes is feeling rather satisfied these days. As CEO of Belt Collins, the Kailua woman recently welcomed in a new member of the family - Shapins & Associates, a landscape architecture firm in Boulder, Colo. BC acquired it and will merge operations to give the Honolulu-based international planning and design firm “a greater presence in the Western United States” ...
You have until New Year’s Day to view the amazing exhibit of 86 wreaths in Honolulu Hale’s Lane Gallery. And while you’re there, take a longer look at the winning entries from the Windward side. Kaneohe resident Suzi Coleman‘s 30 art students at the Hawaii State Hospital won a Judges’ Choice award for their entry, “Winter Wonderland at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.” “We had a nene, ‘ohelu berries, a wild pig, ferns, paintings, old enlarged postcards, clay spiders and birds and bugs,” Suzi said proudly. “It was a group educational project.” She teaches the class through the Windward School for Adults’ ABE (Adult Basic Education) program. Also winning a Judges’ Choice award were the third-graders in Le Jardin Academy’s extended day program ...
Vaughn Withers
Vaughn Withers of Kailua has completed Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas. So has Richardson Sunga (Kalaheo ‘06) ... Andrew Simeona of Castle High met with the mayor last week at Honolulu Hale as one of Mufi Hannemann‘s 21st Century Ahupuaa Youth Ambassadors. With 28 peers from other Oahu high schools, Andrew discussed new strategies to educate the island about sustainability and energy issues. The mayors says he hopes to tap their energy and leadership potential as stewards of the future ...
Better late than never. Out of more than 2,500 entries in its trivia contest, Windward Mall picked five top winners this fall as part of its 25th anniversary celebration. Ah, but shame. The grand prize winner, Roy Hiramoto, is from Mililani! He won a trip for his family to Disneyland. The other trivia champions were David Suzuki, a Kaneohe resident in second place; Kaneohe’s Kevin Nekomoto, third; Mililani’s (again!) Dolores Buenconsejo-Kunz, fourth; and Kaneohe’s Roberta Souza, completing the top five recallers in fifth place ...
Here’s some “revenge” for that: Two Windward residents won recognition in the Oahu Arts Center’s 2007 writing contest, which is sponsored by a group that is advocating for a performing arts center in Mililani Mauka. Tamara Moan of Kailua took third place (and $50 cash) for her entry, Holding the Pose, and Alice Anne Parker of Hauula earned an honorable mention for I Loved Teaching
