Del.icio.usWindward Community College students Jaynus Kekauoha, Kathy Montgomery, Mikki O’Phelan, Brandi Kohatsu, James Medeiros, Sharyn Kepano and Stephanie Fukuda recently won a total of $4,000 in scholarships from Kaneohe Business Group and the Windward Hoolaulea/Kamehameha Schools ... Windward produced two winners in the 2007 Hawaii Music Teachers Association string and piano competitions. Awarded honorable mention at their Nov. 12 recital in UH-Manoa’s Orvis Auditorium were Nike Hokama (strings) and Chara Hokama (strings) ...

Retired public relations man Lou Torraca of Aikahi Park says you really feel old when your own son retires from the military. David Torraca has completed a 20-year career in the Air Force, ending up as a master navigator with a dozen assignments to Iraq, as well as Kosovo, Afghanistan and other hot spots in the Persian Gulf. They now live in Florida with their three kids, where David’s wife Karen, remains on AF active duty ... With the 10th anniversary of the H-3 Freeway last week, I recalled the 10K fun run that preceded it to rally fans and not-quite fans to the highway’s cause. One of my toe-nails dropped off during that walk, and it’s never been the same since. The corridor hasn’t been the same either: first, the John Burns tunnels, then the Tets Harano tunnels. We can also add “Hospital Rock Tunnels” to the lore and The Stairs That Must Not Be Climbed. Look for a TV story about our H-3 Jan. 28 on the History Channel (The Superhighways episode of Modern Marvels) ... Speaking of modern Windward marvels, David Neuberger won the Kailua Intermediate School geography bee ...

Castle grads Erin Chang Wells and Kevin Chang will open for Tyrone Wells and Justin Young (Kalaheo grad) at 8 p.m. Dec. 27 at Anna Bannana’s on Beretania Street. (Erin goes by Elina when she sings.) All four have their own albums out and their own styles, but to hear them live on one stage could be a great, late Christmas present for yourself. Tickets are $10 at the door (946-5190). The Wells also will give musical testimony at Mountain View Church on Sunday (see story on page 19). Do I sound like a proud mom/mother-in-law or what!? ... Local portrait artist Wayne Takazono must hold a record for the number of faces he paints. In addition to classes in Honolulu and at his studio at the Atrium in Kaneohe, Wayne spends several days each month drawing portraits at stores. He’s at the Marine base exchange this month, offering free sketches to Marines and sailors to show his appreciation for their service ... It’s said that Kainalu fifth-grader Kiana Ahovelo‘s voice can make grown men weep. She also dances, as she and her cousins perform locally as the Celtic Keiki - and she teaches Irish step dance Friday nights at WCC. However, at age 10, Kiana already has her priorities straight for the future: “I want to sing the Star-spangled Banner for the Green Bay Packers” (her mom’s hometown) ... Speaking of cold places, keiki of deployed or deploying families in the 3rd Marines got 30 tons of snow to play in last Wednesday, courtesy of Outrigger Hotels & Resorts, which delivered it all in refrigerated trucks to the Kaneohe base ... Habilitat still has six containers of trees left to sell, after filling 6,000 orders. “We have all types at a great price,” Janet says. Call 235-3691 ... Can you fit into your high school prom duds?
