There’s a drive on Sunday at Don Quijote Kailua (see calendar), or you can make an appointment at the Hawaii Blood Bank headquarters on Dillingham, just like Kaneohe resident Bray Kapiko, the blood bank newsletter’s Cover Guy for December. Bray is a Century Donor, which means he’s donated blood more than 100 times! (It’s more like 150 by now.) For his day job, Bray makes sure the electricity keeps flowing at Hickam Air Force Base ...
Kaneohe native and renowned pianist Shawn Moseley performs at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Hawaii Public Radio’s Atherton Studio with guitarist Stephen Inglis for fans of acoustic and classical sensibilities (955-8821) ... Out of nearly 1,600 entries in Kaneohe Bay Shopping Center’s annual Holiday Giveaway drawing, the two lucky winners are Rosemary Baker of Kaneohe, who won a $200 Longs gift card, and Marilyn Ormonde of Kailua, who won a $200 Safeway gift card. And according to Marilyn, she “usually doesn’t enter contests” ...
Kaneohe resident Toni Davis might say that life is just a box of chocolates. In a drawing, she won a trip to Las Vegas for answering an online quiz (many times) to promote Hawaiian Host Chocolates’ 80th anniversary. Toni and husband George - both retired - are ready to take off anytime on the Vacations Hawaii trip for two ... Ernie and JoDee Hunt will celebrate the talents of Windward young people this month at First Friday downtown (5 to 9 p.m. Jan. 4). The Lanikai couple’s Mendonca Building courtyard will feature artwork by Rick Pettit‘s students at King Intermediate School, Alicia Rogan‘s students at Castle High School and Daunna Yanoviak‘s students from her Kailua studio. In the lineup are Elizabeth and Gabrielle Polendey, Emily and Max Wright, Sarah Yiu, Samantha and Gabriela Caps and Eva Armsden - with music by Fred Gayagas ...
As noted in last week’s column, Kailua Intermediate School student Taylor Harper‘s essay on leadership earned her the opportunity to shadow a legislator for a day during the next session. Only problem is, I called her a he. Sorry, Taylor ... Sean Kiai Kitaoka of Kaneohe received his doctor in philosophy degree during winter commencement ceremonies at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His hands must have been shaking from the chill ... Small World department: Steve and Eve Basso took a well-deserved vacation from Steve’s laundry business (Kaneohe and Sunshine laundromats) by hiking in the Grand Canyon. While trekking along, a fellow hiker approached Steve and declared: “I know you! I use your laundromat in Kaneohe!” ...
And the other night at Haleiwa Joe’s-Haiku we were treated to our 39th anniversary dinner by my daughter and her husband. Playing our requests was Del Beazley (great stuff), who then mentioned that his Kaneohe family has been mentioned in this column. Then at the next table, our kids spotted a family that had been in line with them at the L.A. airport just 24 hours before ... On a more serious note, January may be a good time to start reading, and Andy Anderson at Hina Mauka has a bookstore full of useful titles like Each Day a New Beginning and Addict in the Family (447-5227) ... Windward’s smooth girl band Mighty J will do its contemporary, acoustic thing at 1 p.m. Sunday on the Ward Warehouse Amphitheater stage (778-2945) ... Jennifer Castillo-Magana of Kahuku has graduated from Army National Guard basic training at Fort Jackson, S.C.
