Aboy from Waimanalo homestead land, Benjamin Henderson, has risen to be president and executive director of the Queen Liliuokalani Children’s Center. Ben was appointed last month and moves over from his post as deputy chairman for the Department of Hawaiian Home Lands ... Dream job: Hawaii FIDO’s service therapy dog, Wahoo, will soon become a permanent “staff member” in the Hawaii State Hospital’s animal assisted therapy program. Clint Rodriguez of Kaneohe has deployed to Sather Air Base in Iraq with the Air National Guard. Clint, a staff sergeant, is a pavement and construction equipment journeyman, normally assigned to the 154th Civil Engineering Squadron at Hickam. Sather is the largest and busiest aerial port terminal in Iraq ... Japan Golf Tour legend Kiyoshi Murota has signed to represent Turtle Bay Resort throughout the 2008 seasons, complete with the resort’s golf shirt logo and golf bag. Kiyoshi, a multiple winner on the Japan tour, has played against Hawaii’s David Ishii and even shares the same birth date with him ...

Another legend is comedienne Rusty Warren, known for her lively Las Vegas shows in the 1960s and bawdy (but gold) albums - including the hit Knockers Up! Now retired and sporting white hair instead of rusty red, she has settled at the Blue Stone in Lanikai and is the official tutu for Liz Rizzo‘s golden retriever, Buddy, Oceanic online “columnist.” Rusty, 76, plays bridge these days, keeps up with her fans by phone and e-mail, goes to movies and does lunch. “I had a wonderful career,” she declares, “and I was one of the first loud-mouthed women to admit they like sex.” And to think she started out preparing to be a concert pianist! At 86, Alice Yoder is not slowing down either. The Kaneohe widow - who is also known for her mango chutney at First Presbyterian’s church bazaars - plans a mission trip to Kenya later this month. It’s one of many trips she’s taken to help a hospital near Nairobi. Alice was born on the property before the hospital was built, but her plan is to use the nearly $30,000 she’s raised to install a water well, hopefully while she’s there. Church friend Nancy Schoocraft will stage a garage sale for the cause from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at 345 Kealahou St. in Hawaii Kai. To help or to join Alice’s mission, call her at 247-5298 ... The Deal or No Deal show with Castle grad Brad Falcon aired last week, and the Kaneohe/Maui clan’s bid for riches took up the entire riotous hour. Brad brought leis, then took away $260,000 - which included a $25,000 bonus for cutting off his braided goatee ...
Overheard at a Kaneohe supermarket’s produce display: “Are you really going to eat those cucumbers (at two for $5)? That’s more than the price of gas!” “Ah, yes, I am.” “Well, go ahead then. Eat them both - then you can make your own gas!” ... Windward church services last weekend bid aloha to two who made a difference: comedian Kent Bowman, who pioneered and perfected local pidgin in his routines, and playwright Lisa Matsumoto, whose Ohia Productions is based at WCC. Lisa was just at Borders Kaneohe Dec. 8 with her cousin, Mike Furuya, to autograph their book, The Christmas Gift of Aloha
