A Matter Of Opinion

I think that for as long as I live, I will never understand women. Believe me, it’s not for lack of trying. Naturally, I’m talking about my wife here, who as far as I’m concerned can represent the universe of married women.

We husbands seem to be like a science experiment - one with lousy results. Our wives keep repeating the same experiment in the hopes that they one day get a satisfying result. Not gonna happen. For example, my wife and I have been attending quite a few social events.

While for the most part, they are fun, it’s kind of a requirement in my capacity as publisher of MidWeek. My wife is a real trouper where this is concerned, with the exception of one thing. That thing is what she should wear to all these different events.

I am perfectly happy to have her go out to shop for something appropriate, provided I don’t have to accompany her. However, for as long as we’ve been together, my wife insists that I participate in the process, no matter how small that role may be.

The other week we were going to attend a formal occasion and my wife went out to shop for an appropriate gown. She called me and raved that she found something. Thinking I was home free, she then added that line which can make grown men cry, “I didn’t buy it, I want your opinion.”

Why wives want our opinion is beyond me, and the paradox is in if they want an honest opinion or just want us to out-andout lie. My experience is, either way, we lose.

I met her at Macy’s and she tried on the gown. It looked absolutely great on her and I told her so.

The first thing she says back to me is this, “No really, tell me the truth.” After about a 15 minute dissertation on the merits of the dress, I sold her on my opinion, nothing less than like trying to talk my way off death row. Just before I blacked out, I heard her say, “OK, now come with me because I need a bra for this.”
