Ron Nagasawa is on vacation. This column was previously published in August 2001.

I received this letter recently and wanted to share it with MidWeek readers while I’m on vacation this week.

Dear Ron: I thought you’d like to know that the embarrassing stuff you write about doesn’t just happen to you. In fact, I recently had what my wife called - when I told her my story - a “Ron Nagasawa moment.”

It happened like this.

I had to work late recently and was the last person left in the office, and I had to use the bathroom before leaving for the day. To be discreet, let’s just say that this was a sit-down job.

Well, no sooner had I gotten myself settled when the overhead fluorescent light began to flicker. And very quickly it grew dimmer and dimmer, and the restroom grew darker and darker.

The problem was that my, uh, business was taking longer than expected.

Usually our office manager might have helped because his office is just around the corner from the men’s room. I could have shouted for help. But he was gone, along with everyone else.

So it became a race to see if the light would totally fade before I no longer needed to see what I was doing. Talk about pressure! I love spooky movies, but this time I was truly terrified as the lua grew darker and darker.

To make a long story short, I was able to finish my business in the twilight. And as I was washing my hands, the lights finally failed. Fortunately, I know that room well and was able to feel my way to the door.

Anyway, it occurs to me that many of your faithful readers must have had a “Ron Nagasawa moment” too, and would like to share it with you and MidWeek.

Just sign me, “Relieved in Kaimuki”

Dear Relieved: Thanks for your letter. Glad to know that you were able to make a clean getaway.

As for your suggestion, it’s a great idea! So I’m inviting other MidWeek readers to send in their own “Ron Nagasawa moments” that I’ll share in this space from time to time.

It’s good to know I’m not alone.
