Let me start off by thanking all my readers for the kind calls, letters and e-mails regarding the health of my in-laws. My wife and I truly appreciate it. There are no words that can convey the gratitude we feel toward all of you.
Needless to say, a lot of our family’s time has been spent at the hospital. Despite that, I’ve been sticking to my new health regimen as best I can. Not many people have noticed, but I’ve lost a few pounds.
That’s created a problem that I never thought I’d have - my pants are too loose at the waist. Of course, the last three years I’ve been wearing a particular brand of pants. They’re called Dockers, and they have a stretch waistband that “gives” another inch or two.
The other day I wore them sans a belt because I was rushing out the door. Throughout the day I kept having to pull up my pants. After work I headed to the hospital to meet up with my family. Our 12-year-old daughter was there with her homework sprawled all over.
When it was time to leave, we packed up all her books and binders, and they filled a backpack plus a canvas carrying bag. I volunteered to take both bags to the car. I could not believe how heavy those were. If I were boarding a plane, it would cost $200 extra.
I had a bag in each hand to create balance while I walked. When we got to the parking garage, I had to take the elevator alone to my car. I told my daughter I would take her bags. I stepped into the elevator, pressed the button with my elbow while trying to fish my car keys out of my pocket.
Somehow all that fidgeting caused my pants to fall down. Before I could drop the bags to pull them up, the elevator doors opened and there stood an elderly couple. They refused to get in and said they would catch the next elevator. Guess I couldn’t blame them.
Kind of gives new meaning to that rogue hit song from American Idol, Pants On the Ground.
