Back To The Future

Two weekends ago, I attended my 30th class reunion for Leilehua High School. It was also my wife’s reunion as she, too, graduated from Leilehua in 1976. We really didn’t know each other back then as our graduating class was comprised of more than 700 students.

It’s kind of funny to me that I would end up marrying someone from my own high school.

That’s because I never really dated anyone from my school while I attended it. I always went out with girls from other schools, or “townies,” as we used to call them.

Not that I didn’t want to date Leilehua girls. In fact, I had some serious crushes (the names of those women will go with me to the grave). Anyway, it’s funny how preparing to go to this reunion thrust me back to when I was preparing to go to the prom.

I had been on the preparation plan for months. The diet and exercise plan I started in January was paying off. During my vacation, I had managed to lay down a really great tan. The week before the reunion I got a haircut and some new clothes, so I was 100 percent ready to go.

Then it happened. Twenty-four hours before the reunion, I broke out with a pimple right smack on my nose. Not sure what caused this to happen, except that the gods of fate who also did this to me just before prom must have come back in honor of my reunion.

I tried every remedy known to man, but short of wearing Clearasil clown makeup, I was going to attend my 30th reunion as Rudolph the red-nosed reindeer. My wife lovingly tried to downplay the blemish, but I just couldn’t believe it and came thisclose to not going.

In the end I just decided to “suck it up” and go because after all, I’m a guy.

That and because I was going with the prettiest girl of the prom anyway.
