I know that airport security is tight, but I never figured I’d be the guy “busted” for carrying my 22-month-old daughter’s “contraband.”
A few weeks ago, I was involved in some business training sessions on the Neighbor Islands. That meant flying to a different island nearly every day for a week.
On the day scheduled for Maui, I had to catch a particularly early flight out of Honolulu. This threw a major monkey wrench into my family’s morning schedule.
As I got dressed and my wife prepared breakfast for our 9-year-old son, our daughter was occupying herself by going through a bag of sundries my wife had purchased the day before.
When I went to kiss my daughter goodbye, I found her among scattered and opened containers of toothpaste, cotton balls, Band-Aids and various other bathroom supplies. She stood up, hugged my leg and unbeknownst to me, stuck something into my pants pocket.
I got to the airport and checked in at the ticket counter when I realized I was late, that the flight to Maui was already boarding. I ran for the gate, but came to a dead stop at the security checkpoint.
Anxious not to miss my flight, I bolted through the metal detector and set it off. The woman security officer asked me to go back through after I emptied out the contents of my pockets into her little plastic tray. I did so without hesitation, and as the contents of my pockets left my hands and hit the tray, I saw what it was that my daughter had surreptitiously placed in there - a tampon.
I tried to pretend that it wasn’t from me and collected everything from the tray except for that one item. The all-too-efficient security woman rattled the tampon in the tray and said that I’d forgotten something.
Luckily, she also had a sense of humor and said, “That time of the month, eh?” To which I replied,
“You don’t know the half of it.”
