You already know this, but I’m married to a great woman. Still, I can’t help feeling sometimes that she’s trying to kill me. Not literally, but in the same way our daughter will kill me when she starts dating.

Last Saturday night we were all sitting down enjoying some TV. Like an epiphany, she suddenly looked at me and said, “I forgot to tell you that my car isn’t working.” I’m not sure why she waited to tell me at the time of the week when I can do absolutely nothing about it.

We go to church on Sundays, and my truck can no longer fit the four of us now adult-sized people. My wife described the problem and it sounded like the battery. I decided I would get up early on Sunday and see if I could fix it.

When I jumped in the car, it started up just fine. I drove it to see if I could locate a replacement battery. Because I wasn’t sure if the car would start up again if I shut it off, I kept it running at all my stops. Although it’s an American car, no one stocked a replacement battery for it.

Since it was Sunday, some of my options were closed. I was starting to get stressed out, as my wife needed a functional car for work the next day. We had just spent more than $400 renewing the registration for her car and my truck, and that prompted me to check on our safety inspections.

They had both expired. Now, on a Sunday, I had to find a place that would certify both vehicles. I took my wife’s car, still running, to a little shop that might do the inspections on a Sunday. I lucked out because they did. Unfortunately, one of my wife’s tires was questionable, so it didn’t pass.

Nearly giving up, I figured I’d get my truck safety inspected and my wife could use it to get to work. I drove my truck to the same station. I had two questionable tires and it didn’t pass. I now had to buy a new battery, two truck tires, one high-performance tire and two safety inspections.

Throw in the cost of the registrations and I would have been better off turning in both vehicles for the Cash for Clunkers program.
