Dad Gets Voted Out

Del.icio.usI have never been more passionate about an election campaign than I have been this year. No, I’m not talking about the Case/Akaka race or the District 2 seat election. I’m talking about our 9-year-old daughter’s campaign to be president of her fourth-grade class.
The other weekend, my wife and daughter approached me as I was doing some reading. Our daughter said that she was running for class president and had until Monday to come up with a poster and a campaign plan for the election on Tuesday.
They came to the right man. I asked who she was running against. She told me that two boys in her class were running. She appeared defeated saying, “I just know all the boys in the class are going to vote for them.”
I guess that’s how it is in the fourth grade.
Well, I decided that no daughter of mine is going down without an all out campaign fight. Using my experience in the media, I told her we were going to decimate the two boys. My wife rolled her eyes and said, “Honey, it’s only for class president, and the boys are good kids.”
So much for my smear campaign, I thought, so it was on to campaign marketing and PR. I went to an office supply store and came back with a war chest of supplies. I was going to make a bunch of signs that our family could hold as we sign-waved at the entrance to the school.
My wife said that all our daughter needed to do was make a single poster and write an election speech. We were only to assist her, and could not do everything for her.
Somewhat disappointed, I dialed my enthusiasm back a couple of notches and let our daughter go to work.
It ended up that she made a beautiful poster and wrote a really good speech with minimal help from me. That was the sign of a great leader, so no matter how the election turns out, I know we have a winner.
