Getting Lit For The Holidays

Del.icio.usI truly enjoy the Christmas season even with all the commercialism, stress, shopping and home decorating. Certainly the season brings our family together, albeit with the occasional arguments over the usual holiday concerns. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Still, it can get pretty draining, especially in trying to accomplish everything in an already complicated and over-scheduled life. I try to shake off the anxiety early on, and one way to do that is by decorating our house.
Anything that has to do with Christmas lights is my job. That includes putting the lights on the tree and stringing up any lights throughout the house for that festive, decorative touch. One of the Nagasawa traditions is to decorate the banister leading up to our family room over the garage.
It’s an elaborate process designed by yours truly and inspected and approved by Mrs. Claus-Nagasawa. It entails wrapping the length of the banister railing in lights, faux leafy holly and a gold-and-white glittery ribbon. I’m no fool, so before I start I make sure the string of lights work.
For the set up, I run an extension cord from our kitchen, check the lights, unplug them from the extension and start wrapping the railing. I wind the lights about 100 times around, and that’s followed by the holly, followed by the ribbon. When done, I plug the lights back into the extension.
This time, instead of a Christmas light Super Nova, none of the bulbs lit up. It was my worst nightmare. After my head exploded, I had to go back, remove and replace each bulb one-by-one until I could find the dead bulb causing the outage. Two hours later, I could not find the dead bulb.
Suddenly, like a miracle, the banister lit up, well, like a Christmas tree. I yelled out in disbelief, “What the heck happened?” Our 17-year-old son, oblivious to what was happening, walked up and said, “Oh, was that your extension cord? I unplugged it to charge my iPod, but I’m done now so I plugged your cord back in.”
It’s Christmas, so I couldn’t get mad. I did, however, ask my wife to pour me an extra large glass of “special” holiday eggnog.
