Getting Your Wings Clipped

Del.icio.usThe UH Warriors’ huge win over Arizona State on Christmas Eve was a great day for Hawaii. That includes me, although I almost didn’t get to see the end of the game. Dec. 26, besides being my 19th wedding anniversary, was also my father-in-law’s 80th birthday.
His son and daughter on the Mainland came out with their families to celebrate with him by throwing a surprise birthday party. Since they were coming out here, my brother-in-law wanted to take in the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl. As Christmas presents, he bought tickets for the entire family.
All the kids were included as well, which meant that my rambunctious twin 5-year-old godsons would also be attending. Keeping them entertained for the duration of the football game was not going to be easy. The whole family pitched in, taking turns in providing distractions for them.
When it came to my turn, the boys were asking me to make them paper airplanes - the same kind that nearly everyone in the stands was throwing in an attempt to land one on the field. I’m an expert at folding paper airplanes, so I manipulated a piece of paper into one of my best designs.
Of course when you actually throw the plane, you don’t want to be caught doing it in case it should hit someone sitting in front of you. The boys cheered me on as I cocked my arm back and catapulted the paper plane into the air. It caught a draft and looped up into the sky. On its descent, it headed straight toward the chest of a woman walking up the aisle stairs. She was accompanied by a guy who looked like he should have been playing the defensive line down on the field. Well, my plane crashed right into the “mountainous region” of this woman’s body.
I slid way down into my seat and pretended like I had absolutely nothing to with the piloting of the plane. The woman was embarrassed and understandably angry. Her husband or boyfriend was scanning the crowd in order to give a little payback.
I was nearly home free, when as the couple passed our row, my nephews both chimed in laughing, “Uncle Ron, there’s the lady you threw the airplane at!”
