Going Ape Over The Movies

Del.icio.usI am in the business of communication, I guess in a big way. That’s why I can’t understand why the communication in my house sucks. My entire family is comprised of intelligent and worldly people, yet conveying the simplest thing is harder than sending a message to Mars.
I think a lot of the time we interpret the information we receive in relation to our individual understanding of things. Then again, maybe we just don’t listen.
The other week, our 16-year-old son’s school held its annual Winter Ball. He planned on attending with his girlfriend. It was being held at a luxury hotel in Waikiki, so my wife volunteered me to “chauffeur” them to and from the event. I cringed at the thought of driving in holiday traffic.
I was right as the traffic was horrendous. After dropping the kids off I called my wife and said that it didn’t make sense for me to go all the way home and have to come back in a couple of hours to pick them up. I told her I would stay in town and catch the three-hour movie King Kong.
I heard her repeat the movie title out loud and then she told me that my brother was over having dinner with her, our 8-year-old daughter and my mom. I ventured to the movie after which I killed some time at Barnes & Noble in Ala Moana. When it was time, I picked up our son and his date.
The next night my brother came over for leftovers from the evening before. He was reading the newspaper and asked me, “So how was the movie, Ping Pong?” I looked at him and said, “Are you serious? I saw King Kong!”
He said he thought he heard my wife say “ping pong” and thought it was a movie like Dodgeball. Just then our daughter came bouncing in and said, “Hi dad, how was Donkey Kong?” I laughed and corrected her too. My mom then came walking down the stairs from her room.
She shook a finger at me and said, “Why are you making your wife call you ‘King Ron’ on the phone?” We all certainly had a failure to communicate, although I kind of liked my mom’s version.
