Good Uncle, Bad Uncle

Del.icio.usThere is nothing like going out to a nice dinner and then have to watch a couple of 3-year-olds to make sure they behave. Seriously, there is nothing like it.
The other weekend our family got invited to a birthday dinner celebration for my wife’s nephew who just turned 18. It was at what I consider an upscale restaurant at Pearlridge. Aunties, uncles, grandparents and most of the family were there.
We had an elevated section of the restaurant right in the middle of the main dining area. Every table in the place was filled and it kind of felt like we were eating on a stage. That was before the performance was about to begin.
The 18-year-old’s siblings are 3-year-old fraternal twin boys. My wife and I are their godparents, and therefore are sometimes assigned to “parent” the lads while their official parents are tending to other things.
We love the boys immensely, but they can be a handful. Actually, more like a thousand hands full. This godparent relationship is more like good cop, bad cop. Naturally, I’m the bad cop. It’s always, “Watch out, Uncle Ron is watching you,” or “Be good, here comes Uncle Ron.”
Anyway, I was growing tired of always being the “heavy” so when my wife had to leave the table for something, I volunteered to continue feeding the boys. I decided to show them that I could be a fun guy so we were goofing around with our food and I think they enjoyed it.
That’s when one of the boys yelled, “Watch me, Uncle Ron!” He picked up a piece of teriyaki from his plate and I knew exactly what he was going to do. I stood up and dove, trying to intercept the now airborne piece of meat. It flew in slow motion toward some diners in another section.
I quickly turned around and pretended I was invisible. I heard no commotion from the meat target table so I figured I was in the clear. That’s when I noticed a large glob of mashed potatoes missing from my plate and I heard, “Watch me again, Uncle Ron!”
