Having A Bird On Turkey Day

Del.icio.usAs hard as this might be to believe, this past Thanksgiving was the very first time my wife made the turkey. Although Thanksgiving is regularly celebrated by our families every year at our house, either my mother-in-law or my mom has prepared the traditional turkey dinner.
I say leave well enough alone, but for some reason my wife decided that she wanted to try her hand at cooking the turkey.
When I heard this, I immediately went into panic mode as I envisioned this as the culinary equivalent as when my wife wanted to learn to drive a stick shift.
At the time, I owned an Alfa Romeo Spyder. She wanted to drive something other than her automatic Ford Granada. We had just started dating, so I was going to grant her whatever she wanted. She jumped into the seat of my black convertible and immediately stripped the gears.
Part of my fear with the virgin turkey preparation is that if it came out ruined, there would be no turkey for Thanksgiving. That’s the equivalent of eating a vegetable platter on Super Bowl Sunday. The other part of my fear was that our mothers were somehow going to interfere with the process.
Suddenly I was faced with the prospect of an Iron Chef cooking competition with the secret ingredient being turkey and my wife challenging the family matriarchs, my mom and her mom. There was no way I was going to come out of this unscathed.
But I did, and I was highly “thankful” for that. The turkey was the best I ever had and our moms were happy to have a break from cooking.
All was right in the world until I nearly choked on some stuffing when a scene came on the TV of a woman having a baby, and I thought I heard my wife say, “Hmmmmmm.”
