Horsing Around With Dad

Del.icio.usThese days, my wife and I spend a lot of time with our 8- year-old daughter, which, by the way she acts, is more like dealing with a 17-year-old. Of course, that scares the heck out of me because I figure by the time she really is 17, she’ll have absolutely nothing to do with me.
That being said, I take full advantage of being involved with her and her activities, as does my wife. That’s a full schedule because our baby is an active girl. To start, she takes gymnastics, hula and Tahitian dancing. She’s really coordinated and is a talented little athlete.
She aspires to be a great volleyball player, but lately she’s been on this basketball kick. She loves shooting hoops in front of our garage. The other afternoon, my wife challenged her to shoot a game of HORSE. After a couple of rounds, my wife tagged me to go in for her.
I was kind of goofing around so I had accumulated an H and an O. Our daughter finally missed a shot so very loudly I taunted her, “You got a H, you got a H!” Well, I missed the next shot and got an R.
Our daughter proceeded to taunt me right back by yelling, “Daddy’s got a HOR, daddy’s got a HOR!” I looked around and every neighbor within earshot was looking at me and probably thinking that the Nagasawas were as dysfunctional as they come.
My wife stood up and slinked away, saying she needed to do something in the house. I held the ball and, thinking quickly, told my daughter that we were switching the game to PIG. Bent on beating me, she loudly agreed, “OK daddy!”
She made the first shot and got a basket. Although I solved the immediate problem, I was still shaken up and when I took my shot, I missed. I looked at my daughter, who had a huge smile on her face. She then proceeded to taunt me by yelling, “Daddy’s got a P, daddy’s got a P!”
