Living in Hawaii is a great thing - for Mainland relatives. No matter who you are, if you live in Hawaii, everyone you know living somewhere other than here wants to come to visit you. I can’t blame them, as Hawaii has everything you want in a vacation destination.

That includes free room and board if you know someone who resides here. Our house is kind of like my parent’s home when we were growing up. All the neighborhood kids hung out there, all our school friends, and all the holidays were spent there with family and friends.

Today, my house has been passed that torch. Not a weekend goes by where we’re not having someone over for dinner, a barbecue, card game or to watch TV. We’re kind of like the YMCA, which is good because we get to know our kids’ friends.

This summer was like numerous summers in the past. My wife’s Mainland family descended upon the island, and for a time, all her nieces and nephews boarded with us until their vacation rental with their parents became available.

In this instance, it meant that her niece and her girlfriend, both seniors in high school, along with her older college-aged brother and his girlfriend stayed with us for a few days. It’s good fun, as we get along great with them, and when you mix in my daughter and son, it’s a literal party.

One thing I was not used to was having so many women in the house at the same time. Five women, two-and-a-half baths, you do the math. Whenever everyone had to get ready to go out, which was every day, our bedroom vanity area looked like a runway model staging area.

In order to get to my bathroom, I would have to go past the vanity. There was too much risk of me getting burned by a hair iron or blow dryer. My son or nephew occupied the other bathrooms, so I literally had to wait to use the bathroom like at a football game at Aloha Stadium.

Even when my sink in the vanity was freed up, I’d find five different colors and lengths of hair all over the place and it took me nearly 15 minutes to clean it up. I’d end up with a hairball the size of a small kitten. All the towels were damp, having been used as hair turbans.

Don’t even get me started about how much toilet paper was consumed during their stay. When my private stash of t.p. gets encroached upon, that’s where I draw the line.

Oh well, it’s family and, in truth, I wouldn’t have it any other way.
