I Scream For Ice Cream

I think it’s great that some businesses that left Hawaii are now starting to come back. Specifically, I’m talking about Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlor. Although there are great places to have ice cream like Cold Stone and Baskin Robbins, Farrell’s has history with me.

If you’re my age you probably remember going to Farrell’s. I was in my teen years and we would go with a bunch of friends so we could order “The Trough,” literally a pig’s trough of ice cream. There were the drums and whistles and straw boater hats and garter belt sleeve holders. It was a lot of good clean fun and ice cream.

Well, when Farrell’s came back to town this past year, I told my wife we had to take our 10-year-old daughter for the experience.

The other week we did just that. It was pretty crowded and we sat in an area that was set up more like a bar lounge than a restaurant. Looking at the menu brought back great memories ,although it had some new ice cream concoctions.

For instance, it combined a strawberry sundae with a banana split and called it a “Straw-ana.” It did the exact same thing with a fudge sundae and banana split, including the naming convention. I decided I wanted the fudge sundae/banana split deal.

The waitress came to our table to take our order. My wife and daughter placed theirs and when it came to my turn, I loudly ordered, “I want a Fudge-ana!” It’s not until you hear yourself say that, that you realize it sounds more anatomical than epicurean.

My wife nearly spit out her water and I noticed two guys at the table next to us. One guy was laughing so hard he was choking and the other guy had chocolate milk shake shooting out of his nose.

Our daughter looked at us and innocently asked, “What’s so funny?” We tried to suppress our laughter so we wouldn’t have to explain. After a brief moment, we had all calmed down. That was until the waitress asked me if I wanted whipped cream on it.
