In The Days Before Electricity

Del.icio.usProbably, by now, you’ve heard just about every story about the recent earthquake and subsequent power outage. Well, now you’re about to hear mine. My family is no different than anyone else’s, so if there’s anything to be thankful for, it’s that no one was severely hurt.
It was also great that because this occurred on a Sunday, our family was all together at home. Given those two things, we were incredibly grateful, and so we decided to make the best of a bad situation. Despite all the gallant efforts of HECO, we didn’t have power for about 16 hours.
This gave our family 16 hours of bonding time, although I had to head into work to help get a newspaper out. Before I did, however, we broke out flashlights, candles and a little portable radio. With no microwave, digital cable TV, cell phones or the Internet, our kids seemed kind of lost.
We huddled around the radio for information and were cooking perishable food with gas - made a pot of rice over an open flame and started reading by candlelight. It was actually a pretty cool experience until our 9-year-old daughter started to get bored.
That, by the way, occurred only 15 minutes after the power went out. As the official Nagasawa princess, she doesn’t know what it’s like to live without modern conveniences.
Still, we were having family fun until she made this comment, “Is this what it was like when you and mom were kids - in the ‘olden’ days?” My wife immediately defended our age egos, “No, no, no, no, no, we did not live in ‘olden’ days.”
Our 17-year-old son, who was passing the time with a battery-operated PSP hand-held video game, put in his two cents, “It was worse, Mom and Dad lived in the time of disco.”
