In The End, A True Celebrity

The other week I took care of a bunch of medical things I needed to have done. One of them was a colonoscopy. For those of you not yet familiar with this term, it’s probably because you’re under the age of 50. The term is self-explanatory — scoping your colon.
Although I am still at the tender young age of 46, my dad passed away from colon cancer and that’s why my doctor wanted me to have the procedure performed. I’ve heard many stories from people who had it done, and they all said, “Ron, you have no dignity during the procedure.”
That’s probably because of where they have to insert the scope and the position your body has to be in to accommodate that. Anyway, the day came for my procedure. Before I tell the story, you should know that everyone involved was careful to protect my medical privacy rights.
It is under my own volition that I reveal the experience, although probably sensing what I’m about to tell you, you want to invoke those rights. If that’s the case, stop reading. My wife checked me into the prep area, a bunch of curtained “cubicles” with beds. They were all full of people.
As soon as I walked in the nurse instantly recognized me from MidWeek and called over the other nurses, who were obviously readers of my column. Of all the places to be recognized as a “celebrity,” it would have to be just before I got a colonoscopy.
When they wheeled me into the procedure room, lo and behold, the person assisting the doctor was a relative of my wife’s cousin. She started talking to me as though we were at a family reunion and I wasn’t facing her, if you know what I mean. I prayed for them to knock me out right away.
I woke up in the prep area and started to put my clothes back on. I bent over to put on my underwear and my gown flew open revealing my backside to the main area. Someone walked by and said, “Hi, Mr. Nagasawa!” I guess J. Lo is no longer the only celebrity recognizable for her rear end.
Ron’s WEBSITE OF THE WEEK
Our celebrity food writer for MidWeek, Jo McGarry, just launched her own website. It’s awesome and probably the best site on dining, food and wines in Hawaii:
Cheers, Jo. If you have any favorite sites, send them to me at: .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)
