Just Par For The Course

Del.icio.usFor a guy who plays golf maybe once every 18 months, I love the sport. Where else can you have a couple of beers and swear like crazy all in the name of fun? OK, it’s not the best example of great sportsmanship, but it’s the only reason I’ll go out and play.
Well, actually the other reason I don’t play that much is that I suck at golf. I don’t know why, as my dad golfed and the guys I hung out with in high school were great golfers - one even turned pro. I guess I simply don’t play enough to get good.
I get tons of invitations to play, but most of the games are on weekends, a time I reserve to be with my family. I will make the occasional exception, like the other Saturday when we had our semi-on-again-off-again-annual company golf tournament.
It was coordinated by our press guys, so I figured it would be good fun to hang with them outside of the work environment. Little did I realize that my lack of skill would give them an invitation to heckle the heck out of the publisher.
I was paired up with probably the best golfers. They teed off first and, of course, their drives took off like rockets.
There was a crowd of people awaiting their tee times building up on the first tee, so by the time it was my turn, I had an entire audience of co-workers waiting for the boss to show them his stuff. With clubs I borrowed from my brother, I teed up the ball and mentally pictured myself hitting it better than Tiger Woods.
I swung and when I opened my eyes, I saw my ball dribble off the tee, not even making it past the women’s tee. The laughter and wisecracks were brutal. As the day progressed I actually got a pretty good game on and finished fairly close to the top of all the golfers.
The next day at work, I was bragging to all the guys. That is, until someone explained to me how a handicap works. Apparently, subtracting a self-imposed 50 handicap off my scorecard before turning it in kind of disqualified me.
