Laying Cards On The Table At Valentine’s Day

Del.icio.usI believe that there is something in the DNA of men that causes us to procrastinate as we spiral towards Valentine’s Day. This can be proven by the fact that flowers can now be purchased all the way up until V-Day at any grocery store and the life-saving, always open 7-Eleven.
Of course, there’s something in the DNA of women that gives them the ability to tell the difference between flowers ordered weeks in advance from a bonafide florist versus those last-minute floral purchases from the same store you can buy beer and cigarettes from.
Even though any floral expression is usually appreciated on this special occasion, the real gift is in how much effort you put forth in the planning and execution of February 14. You would think that I’ve learned my lesson over the years, but those darn genes are hard to shake.
This past Valentine’s Day, I was well prepared, having purchased a gift for my sweetheart wife weeks in advance. I was good to go until the evening before Valentine’s, when I realized that I had not yet purchased a card for her.
I called home saying that I was going to be late because of work. I high-tailed it to the mall and hit the Hallmark store. Apparently, I am not the only last-minute card shopper as the line for the register looked like one for Space Mountain at Disneyland.
What was worse was that the Valentine’s Day card section was being mobbed by desperate spouses leaving the selections to minimal choices and scattered categories. I targeted the nicest looking card in the “Valentine’s for Wife” section.
I broke through some menacing-looking husbands, grabbed the card and made for the cashier line. There were literally thirty people in front of me in line. I was just happy that I got a card. After what seemed like an hour later, I was second in line to be served when I looked at the inside of the card and to my horror saw, “Happy Valentine’s Day, Grandma!”
