Living The Dream

You may not believe this, but my wife and I almost never fight. On the last rare occasion when we did, it was about something that didn’t happen.

We were going through our usual morning routine. Since I take our 8-year-old son to school before I go to work, my wife lets me get ready while she feeds and dresses him. It’s smooth sailing unless our 9- month-old daughter wakes up and the demand for my wife’s attention virtually triples.

On this particular morning, I noticed that my wife was unusually cold toward me, almost as though I was invisible. I shrugged it off thinking that she was caught up in her morning routine, which I admit is like the Army — she does more by 6 a.m. than most people do all day.

I’m not a total lame brain, so when I sense some morning tension, my “extra-credit” help mechanism kicks into high gear. I start making the beds, clearing the kitchen counter of breakfast dishes and will sometimes even iron my son’s school uniform jacket.

I tried to lighten things up by being playful, but she put me off saying that she had too much to do. My son and I looked at each other since this obviously was not the same laughing and smiling morning person that we’ve come to know.

I cornered her in the bathroom and asked what was the matter. I had to find out if I’d said or done something since the time I woke up that upset her. She explained that she had a really vivid dream the night before that I was kissing another woman.

I found myself asking her if she was sure it was me. She acknowledged that it was and proceeded to scold me saying, “Don’t you ever even think about kissing another woman in one of my dreams.”

I promised her that it would never happen again, after which we both started laughing so hard that we woke up our sleeping daughter. Everything seemed to be OK until I put on my shoes.

That’s when I made the mistake of asking if the woman I was kissing in her dream was good looking.
