At our workplace, probably because of my position, I’m considered the policeman of our operation. But I’m not exactly Steve McGarrett, more like Inspector Clouseau. Still, when there’s a possible crime in the office, Ron Nagasawa swings into action.

I was at my desk the other day when one of the women on my staff stood in my doorway. By the look on her face, I knew it was something serious - so serious that I stood up and asked what was the matter. She proceeded to tell me that, again, someone had stolen her lunch.

Like many businesses, we have a lunchroom that everyone shares. There’s a microwave and a refrigerator. As a newspaper, we are a 24/7 operation, so the refrigerator is in constant use. The problem is, food regularly is taken. It’s not really funny, especially when it’s your meal that gets stolen.

Anyway, the woman was reasonably upset, especially since she was doing a food review for our newspaper for a specialty ahi sandwich. Said it was in a styrofoam container within a transparent green cellophane bag. I told her that I would investigate the case.

I immediately went to the scene of the crime and became Honolulu CSI. I opened the refrigerator and went through the trash can, but no evidence was to be found. The lunchroom was filling up with employees on break. I started to walk outside when a production employee passed me.

He was holding a green transparent bag with a styrofoam container in it. I made a U-turn and followed him into the lunch-room. Suddenly, I was Law & Order’s lead prosecutor, Jack McCoy. I was on him like white on rice. I abruptly asked, “So, what do you have for lunch there today?”

I nearly pounced and ripped the bag from his hands yelling, “An ahi sandwich!” The styrofoam container flopped open and in it was chow mein noodles. Everyone was looking at me, and the guy exclaimed, “What’s your problem?” I apologized and kind of explained what was going on.

It’s too bad no one stole eggs, because I had them all over my face.
