Making Out Like A Bandit

Sometimes I can’t help doing things that at the time make complete sense, but when I look back at it, I have to wonder what the heck I was thinking.
Last week, MidWeek editor Don Chapman and I were booked for the Channel 2 morning news for an interview with Kirk Matthews. We were promoting our second weekly MidWeek for the weekend, which you’ve already received, named appropriately MidWeek the weekend.
I was told to be there early, so I got up at 4 a.m. and headed for the studio. On the way I looked at the temperature gauge on my truck and saw that I was close to overheating. I immediately pulled into one of those 24-hour convenience store/gas stations.
Great, I thought, I was going to miss my interview to promote the biggest thing happening to MidWeek since we started up 20 years ago. Determined not to let everybody down, I decided to get water into the radiator system and get to the interview. Of course since I was going to be on TV, I couldn’t afford to get dirty. I rummaged behind the seats and found two plastic grocery bags. I tied one over each of my hands like makeshift gloves.
Next I took my 7-year-old daughter’s purple blanket — the one she covers herself with when I take her to school in the mornings, and tied it over my shirt like a giant lobster bib. I opened the hood of my truck and proceeded to fill the radiator with water. What I needed was antifreeze.
I went into the convenience store and went up to the woman behind the register. I asked if they had antifreeze. It was 4:30 a.m., I had my hands covered, I was wearing a “cockamamie” blanket disguise and she heard me say, “Freeze.”
She raised both her arms in the air when I realized she thought I was robbing her. I quickly explained myself and took off for the interview. It went great, but when we were done I hung back in the newsroom to make sure there were no reports of “a purple-blanket bandit.”
