March Madness

A few columns ago, I think I mentioned that my mother-in-law is now staying with us while her husband is in the hospital. I’ve always gotten along great with my in-laws and have never had any problems with them - kind of atypical when you think about it.
In fact, I’ve really pitched in to help my wife with the care of her mother, who is currently being treated for an uncommon form of cancer. The whole family does, which includes our 12-year-old daughter, my mom, also living with us, and our son whenever he’s home from college.
I’ve prepared her meals, drove her to chemotherapy treatments and even massaged her feet when those treatments take their toll. We watch TV together and have gotten closer than we ever have in my 22 years of marriage to her daughter.
I think a lot of people wonder if I’m anything like what I portray in these columns. The answer is yes, which means I’m pretty much a goofball 24/7. It’s the same at home, where I am always joking around and teasing everyone because I want everybody to be happy regardless of what’s going on.
The days of the NCAA basketball second round, my mother-in-law and I were watching the games while everyone else was out. I fell asleep on the couch and apparently she asked me a question. Later that evening and the next morning I noticed she was avoiding me. I asked my wife what was up.
My wife said that her mom thinks I was mad at her. I shook my head side-to-side vigorously like Scooby-Doo in an effort to clear it, exclaiming, “What? I’m not mad at her!” She claimed that the day before when she asked me a question, I yelled at her.
Thinking back, I probably answered her in the same manner that I do whenever anyone wakes me up from a deep sleep. Incoherently. I went to talk to her and explained that I wasn’t mad at her. Her reply: “Yes you were!” So, just like my own mother, she was telling me what I was or wasn’t.
I decided not to argue and invited her back into the living room so I could continue watching basketball. She did, and as she sat down, she said, “Hawaii TV Bowling is on now.”
