Mission Impossible: Exercise

In case you’re interested, here’s an update on my exercise regime that I started at the beginning of January. Actually, I’m writing this in the hopes that my doctor sees it and knows that I am continuing some form of exercise beyond hoisting pupus to my mouth.

Some time ago I wrote a column in which I embarked on an exercise program which consisted of a brisk walk every single day. If you remember, my major competition in that venture was healthy senior citizen women. In other words, they kicked my okole.

I think I have worked my way up to be on par with their speed. My latest problem, however, has been the course that I’ve chosen to walk every morning at 5 a.m.

I walk the same path every day, since it times out perfectly to my arrival back at home when I can shower and not compete with my 17-year-old son for hot water. Lately, lack of water for a shower has not been my problem.

Recently, our neighborhood association has embarked on a grass watering program in the early hours of the morning. There is a stretch of sidewalk that is completely engulfed with water sprinklers cycling back and forth.

There is no avoiding it, lest I walk on a major roadway which for the most part has speeding cars. When I reach that stretch of walkway in the morning, the Mission Impossible theme song cues up in my head. Suddenly, I’m Tom Cruise trying to navigate past undulating laser beams.

In reality, it looks more like Dodgeball: The Movie. I try to time my leaps and moves to the rotating sprinkler heads, but invariably I get hit right smack in the chest. When I walk through the door soaked, my wife asks how I got so wet. I reply, “The Secretary dis-avows any knowledge of my actions.”
