Del.icio.usThere is one form of shopping that I hate to do more than any other kind of which I can think. No, not Christmas tree shopping with my wife, nor shopping at craft fairs. Not even last-minute Valentine’s Day shopping.
The shopping that I loathe to do is Mother’s Day shopping with my wife for our mothers. It’s not that I don’t like being with my wife to do this — it has more to do with my role in the process. I liken it to asking me to assist in brain surgery. I don’t have a clue what to do.
First of all, the closer we get to Mother’s Day without getting something for our moms sets my wife into panic mode. She’s simply very organized and likes to get things done versus me who waits until the very last minute to pull out a hat trick.
The problem is that she wants me to be involved in the process. Partly because one of the mothers happens to be mine and the other part is because she needs to have a secondparty opinion. Why my opinion for womanly gifts or attire of any kind carries any weight is beyond me.
Last week my wife dragged me to Ala Moana Center so that I could look at a dress she picked out for her mother. I love my mother-in-law, but I couldn’t see why she just didn’t buy the darn thing the first time she saw it and get it over with.
My wife didn’t appreciate that, saying that getting the right gift takes time. I got cocky and challenged her saying that I could get both our mother’s gifts in minutes. She said, “Go for it.” I asked for sizes and then speed-walked through the women’s clothing department.
I grabbed an outfit here and one there and literally was done in about eight minutes. My wife looked at the outfits, ready to put them back and said, “Hey these are actually very nice.” That we ended up purchasing them was my victory until she said, “Now you have to shop with me every Mother’s Day.”
