I believe I’ve mentioned before that I experience one of the great rarities in married life. That is, I get along with my in-laws. In fact, I truly adore them, and they treat me really well. It’s so apparent that in the few disagreements I’ve had with my wife, her mother tends to take my side.
My wife tells me that I love the royal treatment from them and jokingly says that it “sickens” her how spoiled I am by her parents. Of course I say the same about how my mom treats her, so in a way we’re even.
On Super Bowl Sunday, my relationship with my mother-inlaw was truly put to the test. She is a huge sports fan and when it comes to rooting for her team, she can get fired up. And by fired up, I mean enough heat to melt the sun.
I’ve been a long-time Steelers fan, so I was looking forward to the big game. Everyone came over to our house to watch, and it was mostly my wife’s family. Now my wife has a brother who lives in Washington state, so you can imagine that everyone else besides me were for the Seahawks.
Well, there was my brother-in-law’s wife, who’s also a Steelers fan, but she had a migraine headache and was trying to sleep it off. That left me to rally for Pittsburgh, and believe me I was going to lead the charge for my team.
I was totally obnoxious and trash-talked the family to no end. Every time the Steelers scored I was in their face, jinxing their team and yelling stuff like “That’s what I’m talking about!” I was ranting at the whole family, but for some reason my mother-in-law thought I directed it at her.
Finally, when it started to look like the Seahawks were toast, my mother-in-law glared at me and yelled, “Ron, you, you, you get outta here!” Shocked, I looked at my wife who was mouthing, “That’s what you get.” I then did some quick mathematics in my head.
The Super Bowl is once-a-year. I see my mother-in-law at least once a week and on all the holidays. I backed off of the trash talk, pronto. You see, in the Super Bowl of life, it’s always better to be in good standing with your mother-in-law and live to play the game another day.
