Of Legal Age

Recently our now 21-year-old son came home from college for a few days. He celebrated his 21st birthday in April on the Mainland, so his mom, sister and I didn’t have the opportunity to participate in this rite of passage. Still, he celebrated with friends, classmates and his nearby aunt and uncle.
Originally it was our plan to meet in Vegas, since turning 21 there has a twofold benefit of sorts. You can legally drink and gamble. Certainly not two vices we would push on him, but in moderation and with the right people, it can be a lot of fun.
Where our son is concerned, the symbolism seems more important than the actual act. He looked forward to the more elegant aspect of drinking, like wines and something representing part of his ethnicity, sake. He’s studied both and could speak about them like James Bond.
So, he saved his first drink of sake to be with his dad - me. I took him out to lunch one day, just the two of us, and we went to an upscale Japanese restaurant. It took me back to the first time I had a drink with my dad. Legal drinking age at that time was 18, so he handed me his drink of choice, scotch.
We toasted and I threw it back, and then really threw it back, coughing and sputtering. This was not going to happen with my son. The server came to our table and asked if we wanted anything to drink. My son explained that he just turned 21 and he wanted to order sake.
Naturally she was obligated to ask for his ID. He verified his age and then she turned to me saying, “And would your grandfather like one too?” I coolly replied, “No, but I’ll have Geritol on the rocks with an Ensure back.”
