Del.icio.usI think I’ve got a pretty good handle on my masculinity. Well, maybe not a handle, more like purse straps. I guess this needs further clarification. The other Saturday, I had to take my mom in to the hospital to get some knee surgery.
A couple of months ago our kids and my nephew were practicing martial arts in the front yard. Specifically, the art of sword fighting, Kendo. My mom, known to them as Nana, decided to show them what’s what and performed the correct striking form.
Her aggressive style ended up with an injured knee that would eventually require orthoscopic surgery. On the day of that out-patient surgery, I took her in to the hospital. It was going to take several hours before I could pick her up, but luckily the hospital was right next to Pearlridge.
As she was being prepped, I told her I would hang out close by at the mall. She had changed into her gown and put all her possessions in a hospital-provided bag. Just as I was leaving, she insisted that I hold on to her purse.
Now, my mom is a very stylish lady, and on this occasion she chose the most feminine looking purse known to exist. It was a lavender drawstring purse with a blue flower embroidered on it. I told her it would be safe at the hospital, but she played the “if anything happens to me” card.
For the first hour, I tucked the purse under my arm and it didn’t seem to draw any attention. Then I ran into some friends of our 17-year-old son. “Hi, Mr. Nagasawa,” they said and suddenly I saw them zero in on the bag in my arms. “Are you shopping with Mrs. Nagasawa?” they asked.
I blindly asked what gave them that idea. “We just thought that since you’re holding her purse,” was the reply. Overly protective of my manhood, especially in front of my son’s friends, I announced a little too loudly, “I don’t hold my wife’s purse, this is my mom’s!”
