The entire state of Hawaii can thank my family and me for the UH Warriors’ recent win over Fresno State. I write this having just come off the weekend of that momentous game. Little do all of you know that without the actions of me and my clan, UH may have seen another defeat.

On the day of the game, I ordered it from Pay-Per-View and invited the family over to watch it. My mother-in-law is a huge fan although we all didn’t have high hopes for the team, given some of its recent performances.

The fact that they were up against a ranked team at their home stadium looked dismal for us. Still, when it was game time, we all gathered around the television with the hopes that the beat wouldn’t be too bad. Fresno got on the board first with a field goal and our spirits dropped.

Seeing as how it didn’t look to be a very great start for UH, my father-in-law left to use the bathroom. While he was gone, Ryan Mouton ran the kickoff back for a touchdown. We didn’t put our strategy together until the second quarter when Funaki threw a touchdown pass to Malcolm Lane.

That occurred while my wife’s auntie went to the bathroom. We suddenly realized that whenever one of us ran off to the bathroom, UH would score or have a great play.

My wife laughed at us and then headed to the bathroom. That was exactly during the third quarter when Satele intercepted and Funaki turned around and threw to Washington for another touchdown. With only 43 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter, and Fresno State positioned to win the game by field goal, my mother-in-law literally ran to the bathroom.

Her strategy worked, because Tua Mahaley blocked the kick, sending the game into overtime. She stayed in the bathroom a little longer, causing Fresno’s kicker Goessling to miss two more field goal attempts in overtime.

As UH kicker Kelly set up for what could be the game-winning score, I knew what I had to do. That’s right, I went to the bathroom until I could hear cheering coming from the living room. It worked and our plan had given UH the win.

It was the best game we never saw.
