Red-eye Flight Can Lead To Black Eye

Del.icio.usFor those of you who read my column, you know that I’ve been gone for about two weeks. While I’d like to say I was on a vacation, my R & R ended up with me having a severe case of pneumonia. This all started out with a family trip to San Francisco.
We had to go over a long weekend as our 9-year-old daughter was still in school even though our 18-year-old son was on spring break. The only flight I could get at the last minute was a red-eye leaving late on a Friday night.
I knew I was on the verge of illness, but like a man, I sucked it up and went on the trip. I didn’t realize I would be seated away from my family. They were in the center row while I had one of two seats next to the window. Mine was on the aisle and about a row behind my family.
My wife must have some influence on who sits next to me as it was a woman who appeared to be Aunt Bea from the old Andy Griffith show. I sensed she had anxiety about flying as she seemed to have had numerous “beverages” before boarding.
I was miserable myself and counted on sleeping during the entire flight. The woman next to me kept smiling, and I noticed she was reading a book about finding romance with younger men.
About halfway through the flight, I awoke to find this woman snuggled up to me, head on my shoulder. My forearm was caught between her and the armrest between us. I tried to get my wife’s attention so I could clear myself of my guilty-looking situation.
It was like I had a python on me as the more I struggled, the tighter became the woman’s grasp on my limbs. I was more worried that my wife would turn around and see me in this compromising position. Suddenly, the woman woke up and said she had to go to the lavatory.
Just as she was squeezing past the front of me, we hit an air pocket and she fell straight onto my lap. Naturally, this caused my wife to look back only to see this woman sitting on me. The smartest dumb thing I could say to my wife was, “Man, they totally overbooked this flight.”
