Del.icio.usI have the willpower of a 4-year-old - my wife’s 4-year-old twin boy nephews, to be exact. They were at our house the other night along with their parents. We were celebrating my mother-inlaw’s birthday. These kids are incredibly cute, but around their parents they’re like untrained puppy dogs.
I was sitting on the couch watching them not listen to their parents. I think it’s pretty futile, although when their parents aren’t around, they are like angels - really. Kids are like that, I guess. My point is that I can be the same way, and I’m 47 years old.
When it comes to eating, I’m a total baby. I like to eat what I want and I like to eat the way I want. This should-n’t be a problem, but as my wife says, I have the worst eating habits in America.
Take the use of salt, for instance.
Sometime in the last 10 years or so, my wife has become my salt intake police.
Yes, it’s for good reason, namely my health, but it’s irritating as heck. The more she chides me for it, like the 4-year-old twins, the more I want to abuse it.
I’ll be in the kitchen getting my dinner and like a reflex, reach for the salt shaker. Before I can sprinkle the precious crystals on my food, my wife will remark, “I already added salt when I cooked it.” My hand falls short of the seasonal treasure and I stomp off to the table.
Throughout dinner, I will wait for opportunities when my wife leaves the room. As soon as she does, I race over to the salt shaker, apply salt to my food, and then put the salt back as though no one has touched it in 100 years.
I know, like shoplifters, sooner or later I’m going to get nabbed. Yeah, I’m just hurting myself and eventually I’ll break the habit. Until then, if I get caught, I’ll just hold my breath or throw a temper tantrum.
